Art Psychotherapists work as members of the school’s team and contribute to reviews and multi professional meetings. They also liaise with other professionals involved in any safeguarding issues and attend case conferences and review meetings.

What is needed for an art therapist to work in a school?

  • A self-contained and quiet room, consistently available and free from interruption
  • A sink and running water
  • A lockable storage space
  • Art materials (listed below), a table and chairs
  • Liaison time with key staff and parents/carers
  • Liaison time with other relevant professionals.

PAPERWORK
I provide my own contract for the school and myself to sign, the referral forms, referral guidance, consent forms, and any other relevant admin paperwork. I send out invoices to schools, and provide receipts.

INFORMATION I WILL NEED FROM THE SCHOOL
The school will agree to share with me any relevant documents about the client’s mental health. This may include the child r young person’s EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), IEP (Individual Education Plan), any relevant CAMHS assessment information, or any behaviour strategies that work for the child. The school must also provide me with the contact details of parents or legal guardians of my clients. It is the school’s duty to complete the referrals and get back the consent forms from parents, before the art therapy sessions start.
